Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the location and one more individual who escaped after the explosion was found soon after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
