Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of unwanted presents could be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. The diverse haul could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised donated to various charities.
Storage Room Holdings
These gifts reportedly kept in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away for years.
A complete inventory remains officially released, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was presented in parliament. The discussion raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
The collection includes:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
- Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Meloni has been credited, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a distinct method to manage the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
