‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to scoring with Athletic
Whenhe first time the Spanish forward played in the UK, an 18-year-old playing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in England, against the English side two months later, he netted. His third outing, against Manchester City soon after, sure enough, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed agreement, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, now to face Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river flanked by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in four decades. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, the former star and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, dropped, a demotion and a return before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of their lives.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you go through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a turning point because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: execute them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in that year, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day a vacancy arises where you play, a return could happen. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
