Corporate Departure
Summers stated he would retreat from public positions after legislative body disclosed his regular messages with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

The economist stated in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

Summers, who previously led Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed communications showed that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the day before his 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' decision to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the directors," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This news follows after both chambers of Congress decided on this week to pass a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its files on the case.

The bill will afterward proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he intends to endorse the legislation, after modifying his stance on the matter following pushback from his base.

Message Details

A batch of financier-linked emails released by the legislative panel last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.

The emails showed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to link Summers to notable global figures.

Personal Response

After the emails were made available with the general audience, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to restore trust and fix bonds with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following his statement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was no longer affiliated with the institution.

He became part of the board of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
