Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
