The former Liverpool manager states rejoining to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, remarked that rejoining the club remains an option. The 58-year-old, after a transformative near-decade reign featuring Champions League success and the Reds’ first league title since 1990, has since taken on roles in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity for the DFL.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters holding him in high esteem would welcome the idea of his potential comeback. During an extensive chat, he told his interviewer: “I stated I will never coach another team on English soil. So that means should it be the Reds...yeah. In theory, it could happen.”
“I’m 58, which suggests I could make the decision in a few years, it's uncertain. Is a decision required immediately? If so, I wouldn't return. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I'll simply watch what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on what circumstances would need to occur to draw him back to the dugout, Klopp admitted he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing under bad weather for lengthy sessions; I'm glad to skip press conferences four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area in that context, but sitting in a restaurant with the team talking freely, is pleasant. Success was frequent meaning regularly a very good mood in the building. I still have Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh ringing in my ears to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended for his successor, acknowledging his role for the adjustments that won the league in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches in every contest post heavy investment, but he rubbished the suggestion that it might signal a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. An outstanding player. Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built well-judged squad. No need for concern regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Jota, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, and the effect at the club. The Portugal international lost his life in a vehicle collision with his brother recently.
“Can you substitute a person like him? It goes beyond the player himself, his personality mattered. I struggle to conceive the squad absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A profound tragedy for his teammates as well. Not a single person will ever use it to justify results though it's a fact. Entering the changing area which he filled completely. Coping with it on a personal level is not easy. Unbearable.”
