Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
