Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
A single omission did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup demands help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.
The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Personal talent is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in top form, finding the back of the net for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has shown him that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now offer support for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German said. “Bellingham just has a competitive streak. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone must support him and create an environment which he can channel his drive in matches and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 who needs support and direction. He has not played for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it harms the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. The coach wants him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”
He agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is additionally accustomed to representing Man City in a particular setup, to have a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other netting goals from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the duo linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” he said. He does not shy away to be blunt. Remains a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave the ego at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an even better one.
